School song-writing and composition using Britten's Nocturne as a model.
Working with three Suffolk secondary schools we are examining Britten's 1958 orchestral song-cycle, Nocturne. Students are looking at how Britten reacted both musically and dramatically to the wide range of eight texts in the piece and along the way picking up useful hints, tips and techniques on how to compose songs more generally.
Small groups then are taking on one of the poems that Britten chose and are composing their own settings. Eventually the settings can be brought together and a 'New Nocturne' created. There will be opportunities to hear the new pieces towards the end of the year.
Schools involved: Thomas Mills High School, Framlingham; Sir John Leman High School, Beccles; Northgate High School, Ipswich.
