Shakespeare at Night
Red House event
The Red House, Aldeburgh, Suffolk
Sean Shibe (guitar)
Thursday 18 May, 5-7pm
Experience The Red House site out of hours in a special Shakespeare-themed evening. It is the home composer Benjamin Britten shared with his partner, the tenor Peter Pears for nearly twenty years and is now open to the public: come and explore a beautiful house and gardens, tucked away on the outskirts of the coastal town Aldeburgh.
During your time here you can:
Walk through the house as the afternoon fades into twilight and admire Britten and Pears’ wonderful and varied art collection from artists such as John Piper, Duncan Grant, Mary Potter and Constable: there is something for everyone.
Take a short walk to Britten’s Studio where he composed many works. Get the chance to see a handwritten manuscript of 'Nocturnal after John Dowland' will be performed later in the evening.
There will be a display of rarely seen items from the Britten-Pears Foundation Collection which will include a copy of 'King Lear', a play Britten considered turning into an opera and other delights.
Wander round the extensive gardens that surround the site and admire the varied flowers that come into bloom as summer approaches. And why not play a round of croquet as Britten and Pears would have done, on the croquet lawn at the front of the house.
Finally, at 6pm, listen to a recital held in the historical room of Britten’s Library. With limited seats, it is an opportunity to experience music in a remarkable, intimate setting. The prodigiously talented guitarist Sean Shibe, will perform music by Dowland and Britten’s beautiful 'Nocturnal after John Dowland', a piece composed at The Red House in 1963.
