When planning a stage work Britten nearly always required at least a rough idea of the topography of the stage when complete. This sketch was painted as a visual aid for the composer when Green was staying with him at The Old Mill, Snape, during the gestation of Peter Grimes. Beneath the watercolour is a design in pencil of the same set. Watercolour on paper: 9.75 x 18 cm.
