George Behrend is the son of John Behrend and Mary Behrend, who were great patrons of the arts, in particular of the artist, Stanley Spencer, from whom they commissioned murals for the chapel they built at Burghclere. Mary Behrend also commissioned Britten's second String Quartet.
Behrend helped out at Aldeburgh Festivals and was the driver on tours made by Britten and Pears in the 1940s and 1950s. In this letter Britten is discussing travel arrangements to Venice for the premiere of The Turn of the Screw. |
