Britten moved from Snape to Crag House, on the Aldeburgh seafront, in 1947, the year before the first Aldeburgh Festival. This photograph shows the Mayor of Aldeburgh unveiling a memorial plaque there in August 1978, two years after Britten's death. The plaque reads:

Benjamin Britten, Composer, Freeman of Aldeburgh, lived and worked here, 1947-1957.
