In 1930, at the age of just 16, Britten won an open scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London. He continued to play and perform in Suffolk. Two early works - A Hymn to the Virgin and I Saw Three Ships - were premiered in Lowestoft the following January by the town’s Musical Society.
