This print marking the fire at Snape Maltings on the first night of the 1969 Festival (see also exhibit 7) was produced in a limited edition and the proceeds given to aid the rebuilding of the hall. William Plomer’s poem, prescient and hopeful, was incorporated into the work, which shows the fire in the background and Plomer’s ‘soft-flying owl’ traversing the moonlit reeds. Publication difficulties resulted in considerable delay and the print was not available until September 1970, some months after the rebuilt hall was opened, by which time the piece had become a celebration rather than a commemoration.
