Description : The librettist Eric Crozier, who had produced the first productions of Britten’s Peter Grimes (1945) and The Rape of Lucretia (1946), took Guy de Maupassant’s short story Le Rosier de Madame Husson as the starting-point for Albert Herring.

During the time he was writing the libretto, Crozier regularly wrote to Nancy Evans; extracts of his letters were reproduced in the programme for the Royal Opera House’s 1989 production of the opera.
