A work’s BTC number is given according to its place in the chronological sequence. Subsequent arrangements of pieces which have same title – say, orchestral arrangements of folk songs – are given BTCa, BTCb, BTCc (etc.) numbers. This also applies to excerpts from large-scale works which achieve a separate life outside the main work, such as the Four sea interludes from Peter Grimes.
