An opportunity to make history: the Snape Maltings masterplan, July 2005

,Snape Maltings Concert Hall stands today on the threshold of the single most important event in its history since 1967, when Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears realised their vision of transforming a disused industrial building into a concert hall of international standing. This is no less than the opportunity for Aldeburgh Productions to acquire an effective freehold at Snape Maltings Concert Hall, together with all the buildings and land (including car parks) necessary for the expansion of its artistic life now and in the foreseeable future, via the purchase of a 999-year lease. In the 1960s, it was not feasible for the Festival to buy any of the Maltings site and ever since, Aldeburgh Productions has been a tenant of the wonderful buildings. The opportunity has now arisen to secure for all time the future of an incredibly special place ? to safeguard the legacy of Britten and Pears for generations to come, and to create new opportunities for musical development, unique in Europe.

Derelict buildings at Snape Maltings dur for conversion

On 30 March 2005, the Snape Maltings Masterplan was granted planning consent by Suffolk Coastal District Council. Generated through detailed negotiations between the site owners ? the Gooderham family ? and Aldeburgh Productions, the Masterplan is a unified vision for the entire Maltings site, including a substantial expansion of its music facilities through the conversion of derelict buildings such as the one shown here. A highly positive partnership has been forged with a joint determination to develop the site in the most sensitive and imaginative way.
