The Red House

The Britten Estate Ltd. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Britten–Pears Foundation (a registered charity). The company was formed in 1986 when the various Britten and Pears trusts were re-structured, for the purpose of the continuing exploitation of the musical and literary rights of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears.

Principal aims

The principal aims of the Britten Estate are:

  • To acquire and hold the copyrights and right to royalty income of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears
  • To carry on the business of exploitation of the rights in their musical works
  • Where appropriate, to subsidise performances, publications and recordings of those of their musical works which are less well-known
  • To support other writing projects relating to Britten and Pears in particular the Aldeburgh Studies in Music series published by Boydell and Brewer, and Letters from a life: the selected setters and diaries of Benjamin Britten, of which volumes I (1929-39) and II (1939-45) were published in 1991 (revised paperback edition 1998), and volume III (1946-51) in October 2004.. Further volumes in the series are in the course of preparation.
